All the foods.
So. Many. Options.
Thanks to VisitIndy.com, I have been reviewing more featured restaurants, breweries, and coffee shops than I could possibly squeeze into 3 and a half days. But here’s where I’ll track some of the places I fully intend to check out while in town this May.
Shapiro’s Delicatessen
Four generations of Shapiros have kept this place thriving for over 100 years. Known for their corned beef sandwich, recommended with a couple latkes (potato pancakes) on the side. Other features include macaroni and cheese, cheesecake, and NY style bagels. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served daily. And my mouth is already watering.
Located downtown at 808 S Meridian St, Indianapolis, this fine business is open from 10:00 to 7:30 daily.

The Rathskeller
Dating back to 1894, this German restaurant offers both traditional and eclectic fare. After reviewing the menu, I recommend attending for lunch based on the huge price differential, however it seems that they have a nice outdoor beirgarten and live music most nights of the late week and wekeend, so we may be returning for some adult beverages and entertainment one evening. I would prefer to get my more inventive food choices in a place that is known for being inventive rather than traditional, so I would stick to the traditional German menu items such as sauerbraten, schnitzel, rouladen, rounded out with some spaetzle, sauerkraut, and/or german potato salad.
Located at 401 E. Michigan St. Indianapolis, lunch hours are from 11 to 2, dinner is from 4 to 9, and the kellerbar is open until the bartenders have had enough.

Livery
For a taste of Latin cuisine with the opportunity for some fine tequila drinking and a rooftop patio, Livery stands in a former stable house. Menu items such as sweet plantains, ceviche, paella, skirt steak, empanadas, can guarantee a family style ordering of literally everything on the menu.
Located at 720 N College Ave, Indianapolis, Livery is only open for dinner until 10 on weeknights or 11 on weekends.

The Tamale Place
Just like the name implies, if you’re looking for tamales or tamale-esque food choices (ahem, tacos), then you’ve found what you’re looking for. Options of tamales include mild (pork in green sauce) or spicy (chipotle chicken), non-meat, dessert, and then there are also tostadas, tacos, and nachos.
Located at 5226 Rockville Rd, Indianapolis, but only open until 6. I’d make a plan to visit for lunch.
